Green Tea, The Oriental Elixir

We all know that tea is one of the healthiest drinks out there (at least when it is made from real tea leaves and not artificial aromas). The first record of tea consumption dates back almost two millennia. There are thousands of varieties of tea, but now I'm going to introduce you to the queen of teas, the Green Tea.

Source

What is the difference, you may ask. Green tea does not go through the oxidation process that is used for other teas. (Hence the green color in contrast with the oxidized brown-black color of black tea). With this, the tea holds the maximum amount of antioxidants and polyphenols possible. If you are not already familiar with antioxidants from my previous posts, these are chemicals that will protect your cells from oxidative stress and free radicals (basically what makes us age and have all sorts of diseases).

Among other benefits, green tea contains caffeine, so it makes a good substitute for coffee. You can have many cups of green tea through a day, while coffee consumption more than 3-4 cups is not advisable.

There is something green tea can provide to those who want to lose weight as well. Consumption of the tea raises metabolism rate by 4%, and it encourages fat oxidation, which means your body will be more effective in burning the stored fat.

An interesting fact that may convince you: green tea consumption has a significant tradition in Asia, but at the same time there is a high rate of smoking. However, the rate of cancer and cardiovascular diseases is still lower than the average.

If you'd like to try green tea for yourself, be sure to choose loose leaf tea, as you can never be sure what they grind into tea bags, and often lesser quality tea makes its way into your cup this way.

A bonus tip if you want something very delicious: try jasmine tea! I can guarantee that you will find it so super delicious, subtly sweet and aromatic that you'll find yourself drinking tea all the time.

Parabens will prevent products from spoiling, but may spoil your health

We use cosmetic products day by day. From our deodorant to the lipstick ladys use, we have hundreds of products that some into immediate contact with out bodies. Usually people don't really wonder about the ingredients of their products. But still, there is a reason to be a bit more conscious about what our cosmetic products are made of.

You may have seen products popping up on shelves with the label "paraben-free". "What is this all about?" - you may ask.
Parabens are a group of chemicals that are used in cosmetic products as a preservative. Ever wondered how you favorite wrinkle creams stay fresh for months? That is the work of parabens. They prevent bacteria, mold or other contaminations from spoiling your expensive products. So what's the problem with them, you may ask.

A study that examined breast cancer tissue, that around the tissue not inconsiderable amounts of parabens were found. From this the study concluded that parabens are bioaccumulative (your body won't get rid of them very easily and for a long time) and that they have some sort of connection to breast cancer.
The study further concluded that parabens are able to act in the body as mimickers of the hormone estrogen, which is in fact in direct contact with the development of breast cancer.

It was also found that sun exposure combined with a product applied that contains parabens, leads to increased appearance of free radicals and direct DNA damage.

What should we, consumers conclude from the above? Women use multiple cosmetics every day, day by day, even wearing them on their skin from morning to night. Among them (though not exclusively) breast cancer is a significant problem. Modern women are aware of the real dangers of breast cancer to the extent that they encourage self-examination and rally for awareness. But everyone should be aware that the whole problem could be prevented with a change of deodorant or a foundation to one that does not contain this questionable chemical.

What can you do to take a step?

Always check the labels! This is the number one rule of conscious consumers. If you find parabens (usually they are in the last portions of the ingredients list) and you are concerned about using a product that contains them, choose an organic product instead.

Salad, The Gift from Above

Wondering what to cook for dinner and you want some guilt free deliciousness? Well search no more, because I have the perfect tip for you up my sleeve!

It is one of my personal favorites and I cannot get enough of it! You should know about me that I have never been that much of a vegetable fan. The change of heart came when at a restaurant I had some meat that had salad as a side dish. Since then, I’ve learned that the dressing is what makes the difference. I’ve found my favorite dressing and now I will eat just about any plant that is not poisonous if I have this mix beside it.

The dressing is only one of the magical things about this dish! It is super easy to make (I am obviously not a chef), and it is very filling! After you’ve finished your plate you’ll feel like a stuffed turkey and you won’t even think about hunger for quite a while.

Another thing is that it is so simple that it is very customizable. The following method is my preference and it only gives you an idea of what it should be like. Although I highly recommend you to try it this way, but when you already know how to make it, I suggest you create your favorite combination!
Ingredients needed:

Salad:

  • I prefer to use a ready to eat salad mix, usually Eisberg, any kind of it that seems appealing
  • One head of iceberg lettuce (while the salad mix tends to be a bit pricey, this is very economical to make up the majority of your salad)

Other ingredients:

  • Chicken breast fillet
  • Potatoes
  • Sweet peppers
  • Green onions

Dressing:

  • Unflavored yogurt
  • Mayonnaise

Steps:
  • Boil the sliced up potatoes
  • Chop the other vegetables up
  • Chop up and prepare the chicken breast with your favorite spices (sometimes I use a gyros spice mix)
  • Mix the yogurt and the mayonnaise

Now you just have to mix everything together and it will be as delicious as it looks.

The fibers in the vegetables will be beneficial for you digestion, and will help with acid reflux. The probiotic culture in the yogurt will be great for your digestive tract as well.

With this in mind,
Enjoy your meal!

Protect your eyes from the sun

Summer is closer and closer every day, and now that we are on daylight saving time again, the number of sunny hours increased instantly. In a previous post I told you about the effect of sun on our skin. Now let's talk about our eyes.

Horatio does a good job at protecting his eyesight
Source
If you read the post about sun rays, then you know that they can cause all sorts of nasty things. Tanning is a protection mechanism for our skin, but unfortunately our delicate eyes don't have that kind of protection system, while the sun can do the same damage to them as it can to our skin. So put your cool sunglasses on to keep the windows to your soul healthy.

How can sunglasses help?

Although most people wear sunglasses because they can't stand the blinding light of the summer sun, but there are much more important aspects of wearing these accessories. They can block the UV rays of the sun so much less of them reach your eyes. You should look for glasses that cover your eyes enough that they are protected from the sides as well. The bigger sunglasses, the better. Also, look for the indication of UV filtering capability. It can usually be found on a sticker on the lenses. Don't trust them though. In optical shops they can test if the glasses provide adequate protection.

Just as to your skin, you can do much for your eyes if you protect them well. Like your skin will be less wrinkly, your eyesight will be better without the damage the sun has done to it. Among many benefits, sunglasses will help you to stay away from macular degeneration.

So there is no reason to keep your sunglasses in the drawer or in your bag, put them on for healthy coolness!

Eat Your Eggs Darling!

I've never been so much of an egg lover. Through my twenty years of existence I never had an egg in any form that was not dough.
Now that I'm trying to shed the extra kilos gained through the winter I discovered that eggs can not only help you get fitter, but are great complements of a healthy lifestyle!

Source
Let's see what eggs can do to you!

  • they contain lutein, which protects our eyes from oxidative stress, and high-energy protons, thus preserving healthy eyesight
  • they contain protein and amino-acids, essential for our bodies
  • they contain vitamin D, which protects healthy bones
  • they are low on saturated fat

These benefits are great, but I initially started this little research on eggs because I wanted to get rid of that winter fat.
If eaten for breakfast, they can stop you from consuming up to 400 calories that you would otherwise eat. They will make you feel fuller so you will feel less hungry and eat a smaller lunch.
Also, eggs contain leucine, an amino acid that regulates a protein synthesis which will help your body burn the stored fat.

How to have an egg breakfast?

There are tons of ways really. My preference is hard-boiled because I don't like the hassle. Also, this is the healthiest because there is nothing added to the egg. You can eat them scrambled or as an omelet. My newfound personal favorite is the sweet omelet! If you want to sin a little during your diet, try to whip your egg with sugar or vanilla sugar, and it will be super delicious. Also you can add roasted peanuts or walnuts, prepare it as you would your favorite pancake. The possibilities are endless!

I've been having two hard-boiled eggs for breakfast for the past few days and I have to say it really satiated my hunger.

Also a tip: if you want to make your eggs super easy to peel (and why wouldn't you) add a tablespoon of salt to the water.

How to buy eggs in Hungary

Here in Hungary there is a huge variety of eggs in grocery shops. These days, prices have risen, partly because Easter is near and there is a general increase in prices also.

You should pay particular attention to the number codes on the packaging, because on the tray there is often pictures of green fields and happy chickens, but the reality is that those poor things never saw such a landscape. If you can afford it, support farmers who produce eggs in a way that is not cruel to the animals.

There are also special types of eggs, such as the kind that has a yellower yolk, and also a type which is enriched with omega 3 fatty acid, that can potentially protect you from a range of illnesses ranging from cancer to cardiovascular disease. These types of eggs are on the pricier end of the scale.

Also, in Hungary there are still lots of opportunities to buy eggs directly from the farmers. This way you can get great quality eggs for the same or even lower price. (Otherwise big store-chains would buy eggs from farmers and sell them for a topped-up price. In these big stores you can usually find poorer quality, cheaper eggs too.)

Farmers markets are great places to find such produces, and in Budapest and all over the country you will be able to find them easily. Click here to find the list of the markets of Budapest.

Love Your Morning Drink On The Go? Try This!

In Hungary there is not a real, established culture of bringing food and drinks to work or to school in reusable mason jars. Although, in other parts of the world, environmentally-conscious people do it, and this great little invention I stumbled upon today helps just that.

The Cuppow is a reusable lid that can be used to turn your regular mason jar into a travel mug! Great, isn't it?
Coffee, tea or whatever you like, spill-safe, on the go!

It is plastic... But guess what? It's BPA free! Plus, recyclable! My "health and environment conscious consumption sense" loves it!

Although the shipping cost to Hungary seems a little high ($12 compared to the actual cost of the product $7.99), I'm planning to team up with a few friends to share the cost.

If I have one, I'll post a review for you!

Have Healthier Hair and Scalp While Spending Less on Shampoo!

Many of us suffered from dandruff at least once in our life. When it gets a hold of our scalp, it is a pain in the neck (or scalp) to get rid of. Apart from dandruff we have many problems with our hair: split ends, dryness, no shine and so on. We try to improve the appearance of our strands with various products, mainly shampoos. Sometimes  this is the problem that leads to many others.

Source
To understand what we do to our hair, we need to have a brief look into shampoos and how our scalp works. The glands in our scalp produce oil and sweat just like on any other part of our bodies. When there is too much oily gunk stuck to our hair, we feel the need to wash it. For that, we need a solvent that will clean our hair and make it oil free again. This solvent is Sodium Laureth Sulfate.

What is SLS?

Sodium Laureth Sulfate is a strong cleansing and foaming agent, surfactant and detergent that is used in our shampoos because of its ability to dissolve oil. It is a very cheap substance that can be found in the majority (close to 99% percent according my experience) of shampoos.
It can also be found in dish soaps and car shampoos.

It effectively removes the oily dirt from our hair, but the problem is that it is such a strong detergent that it destroys the protective layer of the skin and dries it out. Ta-dah you have dandruff. Sometimes people even try to treat their dandruff with shampoos containing SLS. A vicious circle.

I'm sure you have felt the sting when shampoo got into your eye. Guess which substance is responsible for that?
There are many more claims about what SLS does, but for me this was enough already, thank you very much.

A safer alternative

When I realized that my problems were caused by sulfates, I immediately started looking for a sulfate-free shampoo. What I found was that there are shampoos especially for colored hair (as sulfates "clean" even the color out hair) for more than 2000 HUF/250 mls. I was hesitant to spend that much on a shampoo that I'll finish in two or three weeks, but I ordered one. Thankfully, when I went to pick it up, it wasn't in the hair salon from which I ordered it. I just went across the street into a drug store, and started going through each shelf, checking all the shampoos, all the ingredients, and then I found it. A sulfate free shampoo for 400 HUF/250 mls.

Choose the baby shampoo

It was a baby shampoo called babylove by Drogerie Markt (one of the leading drugstores in Hungary), and the reason that it was so inexpensive is because it is of the own brand of the drugstore. No advertising money built into the price of your fancy L'Oreal or Tony&Guy shampoos. My face was just as happy as the baby's on the bottle when I bought it.

I started using it immediately, and I could instantly feel the difference. My tormented, scratched scalp was not irritated by the sulfates, and it was an enormous relief. A few weeks into using it and my scalp and hair was very thankful for the new shampoo.
Also, there is panthenol in it (which is basically vitamin B5) and chamomile extract, which will keep your hair shiny and your scalp healthy. No preservatives, no colorant, no ingredients made from mineral oils. It sound so good it makes me want to wash my hair!

The 250 ml bottle shampoo costs 400 HUF, the bigger bottle which is labeled as "wash gel head to toe" is basically the same but seems to be even milder to me.

Try this product if your scalp is irritated or you want to switch to a safer alternative, and feel free to share your experience in a comment!

To Tan or Not to Tan?

Now that the sun is beginning to give us its first rays of warm light again, we feel that this was the thing we've been missing since fall set in. It feels great to spend a little time in the sun, and some even start about wondering whether it is time to begin tanning.

Tan skin is pretty much a stable thing in the commercial beauty ideal. It has been around for years, and I'm quite sure that paleness won't take its throne in the near future. While it certainly doesn't look bad at all, is it really good for us? In this post I am going to introduce you to the other side of tanning.

Look at that and you'll never want to be tan ever again

What exactly tanning is?

To put it very simply, the radiation of the sun consists of two components, infrared and ultraviolet radiation. Infrared radiation warms up the earth, and our skin when we let the sun shine on us. Apart from being nice and warm, infrared radiation is harmless.
Ultraviolet rays on the other hand, raise some concerns. The three kinds of ultraviolet radiation are:

  • UVA
  • UVB
  • UVC
All of them can be dangerous and can cause problems. Now let's have a closer look!
UVC radiation is almost completely filtered by the Earth's atmosphere so this one is the least dangerous. In comparison to that, UVA and UVB radiation reaches the surface of the Earth in considerable amounts and can be blamed for 90% of the problems in connection with sun exposure.

UVB radiation is responsible for sunburn. It affects the outer layers of the skin and it can cause direct DNA damage
UVA radiation is the one that can penetrate deep into the skin, and by producing free radicals it can cause indirect DNA damage.

What many people don't realize is that when our skin becomes tan, it is actually a defense mechanism for it, triggered by the damage that has been caused by the harmful rays. A tan skin is one that is not benefiting from tanning but rather screams for help and tries to defend itself.

For the above reason ultraviolet radiation is considered an environmental carcinogen, because by direct or indirect DNA damage it can cause cancer.

If this is not enough, you should know (perhaps from my previous post) that free radicals make our body age. As UV rays penetrate our skin they produce free radicals which, in exchange, make our skin wrinkly and inelastic. You may be surprised, but among the factors of what make elderly people's skin wrinkly, UV rays are number one. Just imagine that all the wrinkles of your grandparents are not simply products of old age but actually sun-damage!

Common Myths About Tanning

  • If it's not excessive, it is not harmful.
Wrong! Even the tiniest tan is the sign of your skin being damaged, just as I said above! It is like saying that if someone shoots at you with a machine gun, it is okay if some bullets reach you. While sunlight is necessary for D-vitamin production, there are many more, safer sources for that.

  • In winter or when it's cloudy, the sun can't harm us
Wrong! When there is visible light from the sun, we can be sure that there is ultraviolet radiation too.

  • A sunbed is a safe alternative for tanning
Very wrong! Sunbeds are even more dangerous as they bombard you with many times as much radiation as the sun would, in a short time and very concentrated. Have you ever seen an over-tanned lady whose favorite pastime activity is to lay in a sunbed? Have you seen those nasty wrinkles already developing? Think about that when you are using a sunbed next time!

5 Tips to Be a Health Conscious Consumer

Reading the first two posts in this blog may have urged you to wonder what steps you should take to gather knowledge about everyday healthy living, and to become more conscious about preserving your health. Accepting that more products are bad for us than we ever imagined, will be quite difficult. Below I'm going to give you some advice to transform your thinking and to tune it to healthy habits.

Source

    1. Be Curious

If you are still reading, than chances are that you are curious enough to make the change. For me it was easy as I am a naturally curious person. I don't know if it is possible to train yourself to be curious, but maybe the next steps will help you pique your curiosity.

    2. Be Concerned About Your Health

You can have anything you want, but at the end of the day you will eventually realize that your most precious property is your health. You should do everything to protect it! Unfortunately, for some reason nowadays it is considered snobbish and pointless to be health conscious (at least here in Hungary).

    3. Don't Trust Commercials or Claims by Companies

When you become curious and research, you will notice that commercials are almost always packed with false claims. No matter how appealing they sound, doubt them, always! A little research won't hurt you, but a dangerous product could. You should always know the compounds you consume. Always research the ingredients that you are not familiar with, and make sure they don't present a threat. (See "Useful resources" below!)

    4. Transform Your Thinking

At first it won't be easy to be conscious about your decisions. You will be tempted not to bother with thinking about and checking a product, and sometimes you will feel the urge to say "whatever, I'm going to buy this anyway". Sticking to your newly accepted principles will be harder than it seems.

It may help you to realize that when you used to shop, cute packaging and commercials gushing forth from your subconscious made decisions for you. Take that control back! When you put more and more products back to the shelf because you realize they are not good for you, you will see the ridiculous amounts of lies companies dump on us.

    5. Be an Advocate

Naturally, the health of your loved ones is one your priorities too. Help them to be healthier, and while doing this, you will reinforce your principles in your mind as well. It will be mutually beneficial: for your loved ones and for you. (I am noting this because you will need to convince yourself from time to time that the effort is worth it and it helps to put your life and health back into your hands.)

How eating baby plants is good for you

You love radishes, onions, carrots, spinach or peas? Then you must know that they are healthy choices to complement your diet. Now, it's time I introduce you to a completely different form of these: sprouts.

Source
Sprouts are germinated seeds which are edible. They contain high levels of vitamins, especially B-vitamins, amino-acids, protein and fiber. They can be eaten fresh, in a sandwich or cooked. They are the perfect complement for your salads. The nutrient content of them speaks for itself but let's see the advantages of eating sprouts:

  • due to the nutrient content you will feel all of the benefits of the precious vitamins (more energy, stronger immune system, more beautiful hair and skin, etc.)
  • certain sprouts contain antioxidants, which will protect your body from free radicals that make it age
  • due to the fiber content your digestion will be improved
  • they are sweet! (literally they are very sweet as they contain significant levels of sugar)

How to get sprouts?

In Hungary you can find packaged sprouts in bigger supermarkets, but they tend to be a bit pricy in comparison to how easy they are to make them at home. If you have time, you should definitely try sprouting. You will need seeds and a sprouter. In Hungary you can get a 500g pack of bio-seeds for ~500 Forints. You can get a plastic sprouter for around 1500 Forints. You can find ceramic sprouters but they are significantly harder to clean and for sprouting cleanliness is essential.

A plastic sprouter (Source)
When you have all the stuff needed, first you have to rinse and soak your seeds for a few hours. Usually the time needed for the seeds to soak is indicated on the packaging. When the time is up, rinse the seeds again and put them in one of the trays of the sprouter. Now the only thing to do is to let it sit and grow. You should rinse the seeds well every day, to keep them fresh. Shake off the excess water to prevent the growth of mold. In a few days your sprouts will be ready to consume.

You should be aware that sprouters have to be very careful. In the humid atmosphere of the sprouter it is easy for mold to develop or your seeds to go spoiled. However water is necessary for the sprouts to grow so the fragile balance should be kept. If your sprouts smell funny, not the usual, or you see anything you don't like on them, don't consume them.

What's in our bottles?

There is an ongoing debate between believers of tap water and bottled water. The video above shows that in the US the two names sometimes refer to exactly the same thing. Many bottled water companies sell filtered tap water while trying to create a brand image that suggests that the source of the water is a glacier or a remote stream in a pine forest (like two of the favorite brands in the US Dasani and Aquafina).
This is not the case in Hungary. For Hungarians bottled water means a totally different product. Due to the country's geological features, it has a whopping number of underground water reserves. For Hungary, mineral water is a national treasure. This product is treated with such respect that there is strict regulation which controls what product can be called mineral water.
Natural mineral water is the water of any well or engaged spring, issuing from a natural or protected underground water-containing stratum, which, because of its source, is clean and microbiologically impeccable, the composition and temperature of which is at the source nearly constant or within the limits of natural fluctuation, which has favorable properties to health, so can be clearly distinguished from ordinary drinking water. (Source: asvanyvizek.hu)
This regulation ensures that if you buy a bottle of mineral water, you will get a strictly authenticated product that is safe and was filtered by nature, underground, for hundreds of thousands to millions of years. Now that we can be sure that Hungarians don't get the same water from the tap and from the bottle, let us look at which is better.

Tap or Bottled?

If you have ever been to Budapest you know that the water here is not nice. It smells horrible, I personally cannot even smell it when I am washing my hands, it is so dreadful. The reason for this is that the water supply of Budapest is the river Danube. Its water is collected from the places where it seeps into the ground as ground water. It is filtered by the sandy surroundings of the river, but apparently not filtered enough. The cleaning process involves mixing chlorine into the water for disinfection. This is the cause of the horrible smell.
The chemical element chlorine is a corrosive, poisonous, greenish-yellow gas that has a suffocating odor and is 2 1/2 times heavier than air. Chlorine belongs to the group of elements called halogens. The halogens combine with metals to form compounds called halides. Chlorine is manufactured commercially by running an electric current through salt water. This process produces free chlorine, hydrogen, and sodium hydroxide. Chlorine is changed to its liquid form by compressing the gas, the resulting liquid is then shipped. Liquid chlorine is mixed into drinking water and swimming pools to destroy bacteria. (Source: http://www.pure-earth.com/chlorine.html)
If you are not repulsed by the smell of chlorine, and drink the tap water anyway, then at this point all sounds good. Horrible smell - lots of chlorine - lesser chance of bacteria being present, right?
The not so bright thing is that there is a debate whether chlorine is safe or not. Some claim that it is a carcinogen and can cause cancer.
If there is doubt, then we should leave tap water for things other than drinking, as we have a healthier and not so smelly choice. Bottled water, or if we want to be totally correct: mineral water. As the legal definition says, Hungarian mineral water is no ordinary water.

Tips on choosing water in Hungary

In Hungarian supermarkets you will find lots of shelves that are exclusively for mineral waters. One general feature is that the caps are color-coded. Pink cap means still, blue cap means carbonated, green means mildly carbonated. (This trend seems to be changing so keep an eye out.)
You can buy quality waters from just under 100 Forints for 1,5 liters (Nestlé Aquarel, NaturAqua) and you can usually find the high-end products as well (Evian and the Rolls Royce of waters: Perrier).
If you decide on a cheaper product (usually under 60 Forints for 1,5 liters) you should watch out for the label as some of these products are not really mineral but bottled water, only the phrasing on the package is different. But you already know the difference right?

Mineral water seems to be the best choice if you are thirsty, so be sure to drink enough throughout the day! You shouldn't wait for thirst to come, drink frequently all day long! Also a good tip that if you have a headache, a few big glasses of water may be the painkiller you are looking for, as you may only be dehydrated.

IF YOU DECIDE ON MINERAL WATER, PLEASE RECYCLE TO PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT!
